Chemworld Fragrance Factory, the country’s premier one-stop shop for perfumery supplies, recently opened their flagship store in SM Megamall. This latest branch is their 17th and biggest store so far.
Chemworld started as a personal business venture of chemist Fred C. Reyes and his wife, Carlene. Their inspiring story had its beginnings in 1985, when the Philippines was at a turning point that culminated in the EDSA Revolution. That time, the Reyes couple was thinking of going back to the country from the US. It was in this time of crisis that the opportunity of perfume making and selling was conceived, which they started in their own garage.
During the Asian Crisis of 1997, Fred and Carlene thought of redefining the business model and extended it into an entrepreneurship program that helped improve the lives of fellow Filipinos. With the couple’s efforts, Chemworld became a way for many others to be equipped with the right training and materials to open their own home businesses.
Fast forward to today, Chemworld inaugurated their 17th and biggest branch at the 5th Level, Building A of SM Megamall. This signifies the desire of the Reyes couple (and family) to reach out more Filipinos who also want to become perfume entrepreneurs themselves.
And not only are they helping improve the lives of Filipino perfume entrepreneurs. Chemworld’s “Project Ylang-Ylang” provides livelihood opportunities for ylang-ylang tree growers in Pangasinan. Do you know that the demand for ylang-ylang is growing because it’s becoming a trendy ingredient in many popular fragrances of international perfumeries? “Project Ylang-Ylang,” spearheaded by Mr. Reyes and with the help of Congressman Leopoldo Bataoil of the 2nd district of Pangasinan, aims to put the country in the map as the #1 supplier of the in-demand ylang-ylang oil.
My friend Ria of Wordsmith-Not and I had the privilege to be invited to the branch’s opening and blessing. Not only did we see the product offerings of Chemworld; we also had the opportunity to join a short seminar on perfume-making.
Their actual seminars, I was told, last only for a day. And that already includes the perfume-making process and pricing/selling strategy. Chemworld also has starter packages that can help jumpstart your perfume business. The Econo-Kit C is the most affordable, and already includes some materials that you can already repack and sell. Kits A and B already include a free seminar along with the perfume-making materials.
From our experience, the whole process of making perfume (using the fragrance oils) is pretty easy, you just have to know the right measurements and be careful with the handling. And you can extend your venture into lotions, soaps, and hand sanitizers. Chemworld makes it easy for everyone to have their own perfume business, and with just a small capital. Indeed, with Chemworld, the Filipino entrepreneur can look forward to a blossoming and sweet-smelling future.
