After 39 years of staging exceptional plays spanning from the classics to the contemporary, and producing renowned directors, actors, designers, production and stage managers, and technical directors, Dulaang UP celebrates its 40th theater season with the theme, “20/20 Vision: Clarity. Originality. Perspective.” And for its premiere offering, it presents “#R</3J”, a multimedial hallucination on William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”.

A retelling of the star-crossed lovers’ narrative, the setting is moved to the concrete jungle in the heart of Metro Manila teeming with corruption, revolt, advertisements, sex, social media, and condominium units. Here, the classic play resonates with the present society’s many forms of commodified love, dramatizing the post-modern tragedy of today’s generation. In an age of virtual reality — globalization, ultra-violence, Internet novelties, generation gap — a question is asked: Can genuine love exist in a world of alterations and foolery?

The production is a collaboration of seasoned and up-and-coming artists. Directed by Dexter M. Ramos, #R</3J is from the adaptation of Guelan Varela-Luarca with Krina Cayabyab on music design, John Batalla on lighting design, Ohm David on set design, Winter David on video design, and Darwin Desoacido on costume design. It also features the Dulaang UP Ensemble with Ricky Ibe, Mitoy Sta. Ana, Leo Rialp, and the works of young choreographers, video designers, artists, and dramaturgs.

#R</3J runs from August 26 to September 13, 2015 at the Wilfredo Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor, Palma Hall in UP Diliman.
