Stephanie Nicole Ella. That’s the name of the 7-year-old girl from Caloocan who was hit by a stray bullet midnight of New Year. Bullet went into her head, through her brain. After more than 24 hours of fighting for her life, after 8 cardiac arrests, she died.

Died because of a trigger pulled by some unknown person. A stupid person who does know and understand how to properly handle a gun.

Stephanie isn’t the only one who was hit by a stray bullet during the New Year festivities. There are other reports from other cities of victims who were hit while watching the revelry outside their homes. Indoors aren’t safe, either; there was this incident in a hospital where a bullet narrowly missed a 2-year old boy while in the pediatric ward. Another situation is that of 4-year-old Ranjilo Nemer who was killed, not because of a stray bullet, but of accidental shooting of an improvised firearm.

As a mom, I am deeply affected by news like this, especially that I have a child of my own.

My husband, during New Year’s Eve, was telling me that one thing that worried him was that a stray bullet may hit us. Worse, our daughter.

I really don’t get why some people would think it’s cool to bring and indiscriminately fire their guns on New Year’s Eve. Worse, they don’t think about the consequences of their actions. Don’t they know that whatever you shoot up will eventually come down? And if that bullet won’t hit them or their  family, it would be someone else’s loved one?

Do these people, whose indiscriminate behavior caused the loss of lives of other people, still sleep soundly at night?

Whoever said wielding a gun and firing it at anything is cool is so wrong. Wielding a gun entails responsibility, discipline, self-control. If you don’t have all three of that, don’t get a gun for yourself. Because you don’t know how to handle it properly.

And if you abuse and misuse your gun, blood of innocents are in your hands.

To Stephanie, Ranjilo, and others who died because of another’s senseless act, may eternal rest be granted to them, and may God’s light shine upon them.
