To My Eldest, On Your 9th

Happy birthday, Ate!

You’re a big girl now and soon to be a lady. I know that you’re still at that stage where play is such fun. But as you grow older and your body changes, you’ll be more conscious of how you look and act.

I’ve noticed that; while your playfulness shines through, I can see how you’ve started to forgo some “kiddie” things. Things like riding the carousel or playing Just Dance. Must admit, I do miss those things because we did them together (remember how you’d tell me it’s my turn to dance?). But that’s totally understandable.

As you turn a year older, I pray that you stay healthy and continue to have that strength of spirit. And I also wish that you don’t bicker with your younger sister too much. I understand that you may feel that she always has my attention. But believe me, I also give you my time, focusing on your needs at home, in school, and in life. As any mom, my focus is on your welfare. Both your welfare. So don’t be mad at your sister because I love you both equally, unequivocally, and completely.

And you will always be my first-born, my first baby. However old you may be, you will always be my baby, the first one I carried a solid 9 months in my womb, whom I breastfed as long and as much as I could, whom I cradled to sleep.

Happy birthday, Ate. I love you to the moon and back, always have and always will.
